Roman Nava

Roman Nava completed the New Directions program in 1998. At that time, he enrolled in the San Joaquin Delta College Culinary Arts program. He completed this excellent 18 month program when New Directions was in need of a chef.

Since the opening of our kitchen in 2001, Roman has been our chef. He is responsible for serving over 125,000 meals per year and he does it with care and passion. As a former resident of New Directions, he is very aware how important good nutrition and good tasting food is to our clients.

Not only is Roman our chef, he is also a great role model for our clients. And, he says that working at New Directions keeps him humble. "I see myself in every resident and am reminded every day where I came from."

Roman certainly qualifies as a success story for New Directions. Celebrating his 13th year of sobriety, he carries on the tradition by encouraging and helping others earn their freedom from drugs and alcohol.

New Directions is very fortunate to have Roman on staff.

Helen Betz

Helen Betz is truly a Renaissance woman. An accomplished painter, sculptor and photographer, Helen has spent her whole life as an educator. She continues that path as the GED instructor at New Directions.

A significant component of recovery is the ability to find and keep employment. One of the major requirements to find a good job is education. Helen patiently guides students through that process. She is an integral member of the New Directions “family”. And, like many others, she is truly dedicated to helping her students achieve success and self confidence.
