New Directions is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) serving men and women of San Joaquin County who are struggling with substance use disorder. For over three decades, we have provided residential and outpatient treatment, guidance, and support to help individuals achieve clean, sober, and fulfilling lives.

Our campus, located on three welcoming acres in East Stockton, offers a safe and supportive environment for recovery. Licensed by the California Department of Health Care Services, we are certified to provide a full range of substance use disorder (SUD) services, including Medically Assisted Treatment. Our dedicated counselors and staff bring extensive experience and compassion to every client’s treatment journey.

New Directions began in 1992 with a bold new concept: offer education and treatment instead of short jail sentences for habitual drug and alcohol abusers. This approach, developed by a coalition of judges, law enforcement officials, community leaders, and business owners, aimed to break the cycle of addiction, reduce the burden on the courts, and improve the community.

Starting at San Joaquin County facilities near the Jail Honor Farm in French Camp, the program operated there for seven years before relocating in 2000 to its current home at 1981 Cherokee Road in Stockton. Since its founding, New Directions has provided over 500,000 bed days of treatment and helped thousands of individuals reclaim their lives, reunite with their families, and build positive futures.

New Directions serves adult men and women seeking substance use disorder treatment. We welcome individuals from all walks of life and work closely with:

  • San Joaquin County Behavioral Health Services

  • San Joaquin County court systems

  • San Joaquin County Human Services and Child Protective Services

  • The State of California Department of Corrections

As a proud partner with San Joaquin County Behavioral Health Services, enabling Medi-Cal members to receive treatment at no cost. This vital partnership removes financial barriers, ensuring more people can access the care they need.

To assist men and women of San Joaquin County who struggle with substance use disorder to achieve sober and fulfilling lives.

The Heart of New Directions

Any substance use disorder treatment facility is only as good as the staff it employs. Treatment is all about helping each other grow. The staff at New Directions is extremely dedicated and experienced and passionate about helping others achieve their goals.

Some staff members have worked at the program for more than 20 years. Many have been with us for over 10 years. It is this stability and experience that help make New Directions special.

Many staff members are graduates of New Directions. They bring their own life experiences with them to work each day. But they also remain here because they are passionate about helping others find what they have found: Sobriety, happiness, productivity, accomplishment, success, independence, and healthy relationships with family and friends. Making a difference in the lives of many others.

New Directions is proud of all staff members and recognizes that they are the reason the program has been so successful over the years.

We are fortunate to have such a dedicated, professional and knowledgeable group of men and women serving the participants of New Directions.
